Off To Abu Dhabi!

If you’ve been following the success of our brilliant apprentice welder, Josh Peek, then you’ll know that he’s off to World Skills Abu Dhabi that runs from 14th to 19th October.

Josh has been working hard to prepare for the competition, practicing his test piece to the highest of standards. It will be a variation of this piece that contestants have to produce in the competition, but the design can be modified by up to 30% by the examiners, creating a bit more of a challenge.

All of us at L and G Engineering like to wish Josh all the best in the competition - we'll be supporting him all the way!

Following Josh’s gold medal win at EuroSkills in Gothenburg back in December of last year, he has continued to work hard, honing his welding skills and is looking forward to the competition in Abu Dhabi in October of this year.

Josh’s Gothenburg Gold

Team UK had a great time at the Euroskills competition in Gothenburg by all accounts, with our talented, young apprentice, Josh Peek, winning a gold medal for welding!

Josh is a hard worker, now a champion welder to boot, claiming his title as best in Europe despite a somewhat painful setback. During the competition Josh explained, “I set my gloves alight – that hurt but I just got on with the job.” That’s our Josh!

We’re extremely proud of Josh and all of Team UK who brought home two golds, one silver, two bronzes and eight medallions of excellence, making this their most successful Euroskills competition. Well done to everyone involved.

It’s onwards and upwards for Josh now, as he continues to work as a valued apprentice at L and G Engineering, whilst looking to represent the UK at the Worldskills finals in Abu Dhabi next October.

Josh Makes EuroSkills Team!

At the end of November this year, L and G Engineering apprentice Josh Peek will be joining 20 other young UK hopefuls at EuroSkills 2016 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Josh, who trains at Great Yarmouth College, is Team UK’s entrant in the welding section of the competition, in which more than 30 European countries will compete.

EuroSkills brings together young people up to the age of 25 who excel in their chosen vocational skill, with the aim of promoting the status and appeal of vocational training. Skills in the competition include construction, engineering, hospitality and creative disciplines. Running alongside the actual competition are a number of exhibitions, seminars and try-a-skill challenges.

At L and G we’re very proud of Josh and his extremely competent welding skills – he’s a valuable member of our team, and we’d like to wish him the very best of luck at EuroSkills! Next stop Abu Dhabi for WorldSkills!

As Skills Minister Nick Boles said: “The young people who have earned a place on Team UK are worthy ambassadors and show the great things you can achieve with high quality apprenticeships and technical training.”

Well Done Again Josh!

Our hardworking apprentice Josh Peek, who we announced last month has been selected for the World Skills Championship UK Squad (See here) has now enjoyed further success.

We’re pleased to announce that Josh has just won Welding/Fabrication Apprentice of the Year at Great Yarmouth College. He also won overall Apprentice of the Year for 16-24 year olds. Great going Josh, well done!

Josh recently attended Barrow-in-Furness College for a knockout round of the World Skills competition, where four candidates from the welding discipline of Squad UK will become two. We wait with bated breath for the results of that one!

We wish Josh continuing success in all that he does!

Further Skillweld Success!

L & G Engineering is pleased to announce further success by one of our bright, young apprentices in the Skillweld National Welding Competition.

Reece Laurie took part in the East Anglian semi-finals at Great Yarmouth College with fellow students Dean Chesters and Raymond Legg, exercising great skill to win the heat. Reece hopes to be amongst the top 10 highest scorers to make it through to the grand final, following in the footsteps of L & G apprentice Josh Peek, who participated last year, winning the bronze medal in this prestigious competition.

Entrants to the Skillweld competition have to complete a number of timed tests, with their work being carefully scrutinised by a panel of judges, meaning that they need to demonstrate both speed and accuracy in their work.

Following the heat, Reece declared that he was “very happy to have won” and had “really enjoyed taking part”. We’d like to congratulate him on his successful performance and wish him good luck in his quest for the finals.
